A Family Adventure: Witnessing the Fort Worth Cattle Drive and Visiting Billy Bob’s

Our family loves embarking on unique adventures, and our recent trip to Fort Worth, Texas, was no exception. One of the most memorable experiences was witnessing the famous Fort Worth Cattle Drive, an event that transported us back to the days of the Wild West, followed by an exciting visit to Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk.

The Setting: Fort Worth Stockyards
The Fort Worth Stockyards is a historic district that offers a glimpse into the rich cowboy culture of Texas. The brick streets, old western-style buildings, and the ambiance of the area set the stage perfectly for the cattle drive.
The Cattle Drive: A Step Back in Time
Twice daily, at 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM, longhorn cattle are driven down Exchange Avenue by genuine Texas cowhands. We chose to catch the morning drive to beat the Texas heat. As the clock neared 11:30, we found a perfect spot along the street where we could see everything up close.

The sound of hooves hitting the pavement was our first cue that the drive was starting. Soon, we saw a herd of majestic longhorn cattle, their massive horns creating an impressive sight. The cowhands, dressed in traditional attire, guided the herd skillfully, a testament to their expertise and connection with these animals.

Interactive Activities and Attractions
After the cattle drive, we explored more of what the Stockyards had to offer. There was also a maze that provided a fun challenge for our little ones.
For lunch, we enjoyed some authentic Texas barbecue at a local restaurant. The smoky aroma of the meat and the savory flavors were a hit with everyone. Fort Worth’s dining options are varied, but we couldn’t resist indulging in the local cuisine.

Visiting Billy Bob’s Texas: The World’s Largest Honky-Tonk
We also headed to Billy Bob’s Texas, a must-visit attraction in Fort Worth. Known as the world’s largest honky-tonk, Billy Bob’s is a unique blend of entertainment, history, and pure Texas charm. We were pleasantly surprised by the variety of activities available. There was also a family-friendly arcade where the kids could play games and win prizes. They enjoyed competing in various games, and it was a great way for them to unwind after a day full of activities.
Conclusion: A Day to Remember
Our visit to the Fort Worth Cattle Drive and Billy Bob’s Texas was a day filled with excitement, education, and family bonding. It’s not every day you get to witness a piece of living history and then top it off with a visit to a legendary honky-tonk. The experience left a lasting impression on all of us, combining the charm of the Old West with the vibrant culture of modern Texas.
If you’re looking for a unique and educational family adventure, the Fort Worth Cattle Drive and a visit to Billy Bob’s Texas are must-see attractions. They offer a perfect blend of history, entertainment, and hands-on activities that will captivate visitors of all ages.

A Memorable Family Travel Experience: Boondocking at a Crying Eagle Brewing Company
Family travel is all about making memories, and sometimes, the most unexpected experiences become the most unforgettable. Recently, our family embarked on a unique adventure that combined the charm of a brewery with the rustic simplicity of boondocking, all orchestrated by the wonderful network of Harvest Hosts. This particular trip stood out not just because of the destination, but also due to the challenges we faced, like dealing with a hot night without air conditioning.
Harvest Hosts: A Unique Way to Travel
For those unfamiliar, Harvest Hosts offers a network of wineries, breweries, farms, and other unique locations where RVers can park overnight. It’s a fantastic way to support local businesses while enjoying some off-the-beaten-path experiences. Our choice for this trip was a quaint brewery, Crying Eagle, known for its craft beers, food, and live music.

The Brewery Experience
Arriving at the brewery, we were immediately struck by its welcoming atmosphere. The owners were incredibly friendly, we tasted some of their finest brews and great food! As evening approached, we settled into our spot in the brewery’s lot, ready for a peaceful night and a good nights rest after a long day of travel.
The Challenge: Boondocking Without AC
As the sun set, we quickly realized that the night was going to be much warmer than anticipated. With no hookups available, we were boondocking—essentially dry camping without access to electricity, water, or sewer connections. This meant no air conditioning on a particularly hot night.

Making the Best of It
Despite the heat, we found ways to make the experience enjoyable. Here are a few tips we discovered for surviving a hot night without AC:
- Strategic Ventilation: We opened all the windows and vents to allow for maximum airflow. Positioning fans near windows helped pull in cooler air from outside.
- Cool Cloths: We soaked small towels in cold water and placed them on our necks and foreheads. This simple trick provided immediate relief.
- Hydration: Staying hydrated was crucial. We made sure everyone had plenty of cold water to drink throughout the night.
- Nighttime Activities: To distract ourselves from the heat, we played card games and shared stories. The brewery’s outdoor seating area provided a lovely spot to unwind.
- Sleep Arrangements: We used lightweight, breathable bedding and wore light, loose-fitting clothing. The kids found it fun to camp out on the couches near the open windows where it was coolest.
Embracing the Adventure
While the lack of AC made for a challenging night, it also added to the adventure. There’s something about facing a little discomfort together that strengthens family bonds and creates lasting memories. By morning, we were tired but in good spirits, ready to continue our journey.
Reflections
Our night at the brewery reminded us why we love family travel so much. It’s not always about the perfect conditions, but about the experiences and the time spent together. Harvest Hosts provided us with a unique and memorable stay, blending the joy of discovering new places with the thrill of overcoming unexpected challenges.
If you’re considering a family travel adventure with Harvest Hosts, don’t shy away from the unknown. Embrace the quirks and the hurdles—they’re all part of the story you’ll tell for years to come.

Our visit to “Space Center Houston” aka NASA

We recently went on a family day-trip to Space Center Houston, where the wonders of space exploration came to life for us. From the towering Space Shuttle Independence to the interactive exhibits, every moment was an experience and we were amazed by the incredible amount of detail that is involved in the journey to space.

We enjoyed the Astronaut Gallery, tracing the footsteps of previous space pioneers. The Tram Tour offered an insider’s view of Rocket Park. A rocket that was built but never used is on display. It is so much bigger than we expected, based on what we’ve seen on television, it’s a must see to understand the magnitude of how meticulous the detail is when creating a rocket.

The International Space Station exhibit provided a glimpse into life beyond Earth. We were reminded that our quest to understand the universe is an ever-inspiring adventure, maybe one day we will have the opportunity to explore space too!
Leaving Space Center Houston, we carried not just memories of an incredible day, but a renewed appreciation for humanity’s boundless spirit of exploration. A day of stargazing and cosmic discovery, proving that sometimes, the greatest wonders are found right here on Earth.
